The CHADS₂ score is used to estimate ischemic stroke risk in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, based on five clinical variables: congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥ 75 years, diabetes, and prior stroke or TIA. This tool is provided for educational purposes only and must not replace individual clinical assessment.

CHADS₂ score:

The higher the CHADS₂ score, the higher the estimated annual risk of stroke. As a rough guide, 0 is considered low risk, whereas scores ≥ 2 indicate substantially higher risk and often support anticoagulation according to major guidelines. Final treatment decisions should always be made by a specialist in the appropriate clinical context.
